Toypedia

Toypedia is a free content encyclopaedia project to cover all vintage and collectible toys produced - ever.  It is based on wiki technology, the same technology that drives Wikipedia.

Collaborative Effort

The idea is that Toypedia is written by the whole Toy Collector Community; collectors from all around the world.  We believe that there are between 5 and 10 million vintage and collectible toys to cover and that it will take the Community three years to have at least a small article on each of these.  We would be delighted if you help with this ambitions undertaking.

So we need your help!

You do not need specialised qualifications to contribute, since your primary role is to write articles that cover existing knowledge. This means that collectors of all ages and cultural and social backgrounds can write the Toypedia entries. With rare exceptions, entries can be edited by anyone with access to the internet, simply by clicking the edit this page link. Anyone is welcome to add information, cross-references or citations, as long as they do so within the Toy Collector’s editing policy and to an appropriate standard. There is no need to worry about accidentally damaging the Toypedia when adding or improving information, as other more experienced Toy Collectors are always around to advise or correct obvious errors, and our software is carefully designed to allow easy reversal of editorial mistakes.

Is it worth the effort?

Because the Toypedia is an ongoing work to which, in principle, anybody can contribute, it differs from a paper-based reference source in two important ways:

  1. It will have entries for unusual or very rare toys that would not be covered elsewhere.
  2. Entries become more comprehensive and balanced all the time.
  3. You can be up to date online and offline; just print the part you need and take it with you to a convention or auction.  Unlike a paper reference source, Toypedia ifs continually updated, with the creation or updating of articles on topical events within seconds, minutes or hours, rather than months or years for printed guide books.
